We offer an extensive selection of activities and with our active Residents’ Association, consisting of more than 40 resident committees; we try to accommodate the diverse interests of the majority of our residents.
Our Concert Committee invites quality musical artists to perform in our auditorium, Cathedral Hall. Once a month, classically trained musicians perform live for our residents using an array of instruments such as the violin, piano, and cello. Most of the professional musicians who visit us have traveled the world performing with major orchestras. We also showcase up and coming award winning musicians. Our monthly concerts are one of the most popular events. Attendance is high and the reviews are always flattering.
In addition to our concert committee, there are also committees that arrange trips to the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera, Ballet, and Theater with transportation provided by our familiar security staff.
Movies are shown every Saturday night in Cathedral Hall with a special encore presentation on Monday afternoons in the large college classroom for those residents who missed the first showing. Our movie committee does a great job of selecting movies of all genres to satisfy the different requests of our residents. From comedies to dramas, romance to action pictures, residents are treated to a full spectrum of movies. Movies range from the classics to recent blockbusters and are the cause of many great discussions.
Since there are a number of professional artists living here, art remains a very popular topic. We offer a variety of mediums for residents to experience in an array of studios and workshops.
Our new Art Studio is used for painting, while our Clay studio is used for ceramics and sculpting. Our fully equipped Woodworking shop awaits the handy man or woman, while our Craft room is complete with all materials for our resident designers. To learn more about what our studios and shops have to offer, please visit the Art Studio section.
The first of each month brings a new Art Exhibit featuring the works of resident artists as well as artists from the Delaware Valley. Each exhibit introduces a different art form or technique from collages to quilts, pastels to oils, intricate pen and ink drawings to hand woven materials. The Exhibits are displayed on the walls in Houston Commons outside of our dining rooms.
We also have a committee that organizes trips to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and to other museums and locations of interest throughout the city. Our own security staff provides transportation.
One of our best features is our unique Library that was originally established by one of our residents who was a retired librarian. Our shelves are filled with both fiction and non-fiction in a variety of categories. We even have books written by our own resident authors. CDs, videos, and reading equipment are offered for residents with sight impairment. Our library is the perfect place to sit back and unwind.
Another literary activity worth taking advantage of is our Book Groups. The groups are separated into different categories such as mystery and historical, so that you can join whichever genre appeals to you the most. Each group agrees upon a book to read and then holds discussions where they may debate their likes and dislikes with one another. It is a great way to get to know others and a wonderful chance to catch up on some reading. Monthly play readings are a favorite among our residents. Our committee chooses a new play each month and all parts are read by our residents.
“The Villager” is a monthly newsletter written and produced by our residents. It welcomes new residents with a brief biography, reports on recent events, and publishes poetry and short stories written by our residents. Our resident editor and her staff do a remarkable job.
